School Visits

“Over a year later the students and teachers are still talking about Emily’s visit. The kids were engaged throughout the presentation.” —Stephanie Bernstein, Director of Professional Development and 3rd Grade Teacher; Temple Emunah, Lexington, MA

Emily loves to talk to kids about her books and the bookmaking process. Her presentations are tailored to the age and religious background of the students. She talks about the Yiddish and Hebrew languages, Hanukkah and Passover customs, and how books are made — from the first book dummy to creating the pictures, what an editor does, and how real people glue the flaps on the pages. Older students learn how novelty elements are created.

In addition, students sometimes get to see The Life and Death of a Piece of Bubble Gum or another book Emily made when she was their age. She illustrated her first published book, Perceptual Training in the Kindergarten, when she was a middle school student!
